The team at Connect for Intermediaries has been running its acclaimed advisor Academy for the past few months, changing the way residential mortgage brokers and other intermediaries embark on entering the specialist finance market.
The FP Show is hosting an exclusive series of Connect Academy taster sessions, called Connect Academy Labs, designed so that brokers can get a feel for the academy’s curriculum and will then be able to sign up to for the full course thereafter.
The three 45-minute sessions will be led by Liz Syms, owner of Connect for Intermediaries, and will be hosted in association with various lenders who will drop in throughout the day, offering their expertise in various areas.
The taster sessions are limited to 15-20 attendees each and are free of charge, requiring just a simple registration and booking on to a time slot. Brokers are encouraged to indicate their interest early by visiting https://cmortgages.co.uk/connect-academy-labs/.
11-11.45am - Complex BTL
Liz Syms from Connect, supported by Jamie Pritchard from Precise Mortgages and Mark Stephenson from Castle Trust.
This session will focus on the complexities of calculating rental affordability for landlords, including the extra requirements for portfolio landlords. At the end of the session, you will understand how to calculate how much a landlord can borrow, based on the rent the property can achieve and the tax status of the landlord. You will learn about how the lender calculates background portfolio affordability and options you can discuss with your landlord when the rent doesn’t fit. Jamie will cover Precise’s innovative income backed BTL giving you further options. You will leave the session with access to free tools to help you succeed in this market.
12-12.45pm - Bridging and Development

This session will focus on helping you to understand more about the bridging and development market. At the end of the sessions, you will understand what bridging is, the terminology used such as retained, rolled and serviced interest, and how to structure your client's exit options including the 6-month rule. You will also learn how to use cross charges to increase the amount of borrowing while reducing the rate. Gavin will cover case studies to bring to life these concepts and which projects you can use a BTL mortgage for, which require a bridge loan and when a full development loan is needed. You will leave this session with access to free tools to help you succeed in this market.
1.30-2.15pm - Commercial
Liz Syms from Connect, supported by Lorenzo Satchell from Together and Nicola Firth from Knowledge Bank
This session will focus on helping you understand the commercial mortgage market and the difference between commercial investment loans and commercial trading business loans. At the end of the session, you will understand the difference between the underwriting of high street lenders and the underwriting of challenger banks and how to establish which is most suitable for your client. You will learn how to establish affordability for a commercial loan and what a set of abbreviated accounts can tell you about the affordability. Lorenzo will talk to you about the options available for a new start-up business and commercial investments that don’t fit the standard mould. You will leave the session with access to free tools to help you to succeed in this market.
The Connect Academy teaches brokers how to become a confident and competent adviser in the specialist mortgage industry.
Brokers that are new to the market need to learn a significant amount about the specialist lending industry to give adequate advice to customers, even if they have a residential mortgage qualification.
The Connect Academy therefore helps those with less experience to enter the market, educating them on specialist lenders’ criteria and offerings.
Its curriculum includes training on core compliance, specialist knowledge, researching the market, submitting business and generating leads.
A typical day on the week-long course runs from 9am-5pm, during which brokers will be trained in a range of topics including property insurance, advertising rules and standards and marketing.
Following the course, candidates will have access to the Connect team and will receive mentoring to help them to achieve competent adviser status in their chosen product areas.
The taster sessions are limited to 15-20 attendees each and are free of charge, requiring just a simple registration and booking on to a time slot at the expo on the 6th November. Brokers are encouraged to indicate their interest early by visiting https://cmortgages.co.uk/connect-academy-labs/.
Dates of the course that follow the FP Show include the weeks commencing 11th November and 2nd December.
